Severe Storm in Norman, OK (June 14th, 2011)

A severe storm quickly developed during the evening hours of June 14th, 2011. The storm then proceeded to pass through Norman, OK where it produced damaging downburst winds and large hail. The absolute worst part of the storm missed my location by a little over a mile (parts of E and NE Norman experienced wind gusts in excess of 80-85mph!), however it was still quite bad here. The National Weather Service office, located just to my south, measured a 66mph wind gust during the storm, which is comparable to the top wind speeds my location likely also experienced. In terms of hail, I would estimate that the majority of our stones were between 0.50-1.25" in diameter (marble to half dollar size). There might have been one or two larger stones mixed in from time to time, but only on a very isolated basis. Further north, parts of northwest Norman reported hail up to 1.75" in diameter (golfball size). ©Daniel Lightbody
